Hybrids Practice Poster
There are two types of posters associated with the campaign of a film, a teaser poster (the one I made below) and a full theatrical poster. The difference between the two is the amount of information they give away, with a teaser being minimal and trying to grab the audiences attention by providing enigmas. Whereas a full theatrical trailer is providing more information, with a date, who stars in the film, who made the film and gives a more insight into the narrative of the film.
Denotations:
- Background picture of the aliens hand
- Tagline at the top
- Title 'Hybrids'
- Website at the bottom
Connotations:
From the background picture we can see that the film will involve some form of alien creature, but however we cannot see the face so we can't tell what it will look like. But as we can only see the hand and it is climbing up the wall, this is sinister and suggests that the alien will be a villain in the film and not the good guy. We can also see a knife on some army camo on a table, this could suggest that the main protagonist is in the army and is involved with fighting these aliens, this could be why the alien is coming for them.
The tagline at the top of the poster is in the same silver style font as the hybrids title. The tagline helps with the narrative but also provides an enigma, as it says that something has arrived but we are yet to know what has arrived, and what they have been doing for this duration.
The title hybrids is bold and is in the same futuristic look as what the tagline is, this conveys that the film could be set in the future. Not only this but it also gives us insight into the monsters as the word hybrid means a cross of something, so maybe the alien is a cross between human and alien. Another enigma that the poster provides.
The website at the bottom of the poster is in a white font and is also small so that it doesn't take up to much of the space and doesn't attract the audiences attention away from the rest of what the poster has to offer. This is typical to see within teaser posters as where it doesn't give away much information such as the date, the website can provide this information that the poster cannot.
How I made the poster:
I started off finding an appropriate screenshot during the film to use as my background picture. I needed to find something that had mystery and an enigma to it so that it didn't give away too much attention. My original idea was to just get the shot of the knife but after watching the film through again I noticed this shot below which I then used as my background.

The aliens face also gives us more information, as where it is big and is faded into the background it could show that he has the dominance in the city, as where he is bigger then anything else on the poster it attracts the audiences gaze at him.
The title is the same as my teaser posters title where it looks futuristic, with the font, which could insinuate that it will be set in the future. But also the term Hybrid, which means a cross of two things, could also suggest more about the alien being a cross between a human as well.
The actress' and Directors name being included in this poster also gives away more information, as we can now tell what sort of film it might be from looking at the directors past work. Not only this but we can also see who stars in the film giving away whether it will be a big red carpet blockbuster, or if ti would be a small production for a break through actress.
The billing block is a typical feature in most full theatrical posters as it provides the credits of all the companies involved within the production of the film, also alongside the date of release of the film. Both show that this poster is the full theatrical posters as it is rare you will one of them on a teaser poster.

My original idea was to just get the shot of the knife but after watching the film through again I noticed this shot below which I then used as my background.
After I got the picture and cropped out the part I wanted and then put it portrait, I worked on the title and where I wanted to put it on the poster. The title I took straight from the film and required me to get rid of the black background so that it would fit with the background of this picture. Below is the title with and then after I edited the background.
The next step after this was to decide what else I wanted on my poster, I originally put links to twitter and Facebook alongside the website address at the top of the poster. But then decided afterwards that it didn't look right and after research into more teaser posters I noticed that none had these either so I got rid of them and moved the website address to underneath the title. Below is the poster with twitter and Facebook, and then below that is the new version with the website underneath the title.
The last step towards making my poster was to decide what I wanted to do with the space at the top of the poster, and when studying other teaser posters I noticed that most of them had a tagline, or some form of slogan associated to the film. So I decided I wanted to put a slogan on it, I then watched the film again and noticed that there was a line during the film (as seen below) which I could just crop out and use as my tagline. After putting this on, my poster was done.
Full Theatrical Poster:
Below is our full theatrical poster which was made by Zahra Malik.
Denotations:
- Background Picture of the city and the woman walking away
- Aliens face
- Title
- Actress name and who directed the film
- Billing block
- Date of release
Connotations:
The background image gives away more information then what the background images of the teaser posters do. From this one you can see that the setting is in a big city, but that it is also war stricken meaning that severe fighting has gone on here. You also see the protagonist being a blonde woman walking away from the city, this could show that she was the cause of this destruction, or a part of the war that happened as she is now walking away from it all.
The aliens face also gives us more information, as where it is big and is faded into the background it could show that he has the dominance in the city, as where he is bigger then anything else on the poster it attracts the audiences gaze at him.

Hybrids Practice Trailer
To get us used to making trailers and posters, that are relevant to the corresponding trailer, we had a task to turn an unreleased short film into a trailer and then make a full theatrical and teaser poster in relevance to the trailer we made. Below is our final trailer.
Hybrids is about a group of aliens called Hybrids, who come in Earth in search of a 'key' and we learn during this film that they key can be found within a human child, so their main objective is to harvest children in search of this key. The protagonist in the film was looking after, who we believe to be, her daughter until she was 'harvested' by the Hybrids. This then sparked her to track down and kill the Hybrids.
We wanted to make a teaser trailer that would provide some sense to the audience as to what is happening, but not enough to give it all away, we wanted to tease them. One main trailer form and convention we wanted to use was the use of a voice over which this film was perfect for. We also wanted to create a few dramatic high-points hence why we put the action-packed fighting scene in the middle. We tried to stick to the 3 part structure where we create some character traits, with use of the voice over, then we create some action with fast paced shots, the end with an enigma.
Analysis:
Enigma Codes:
Who arrived?
What is that machine?
Who are these Aliens?
Who is this woman and the girl?
Where did the girl go?
What is she fighting? and what is she fighting for?
What happened when she pressed the button?
How are the Characters established and represented:
The first character we see in the trailer is of the Aliens, we see straight away that he looks angry and slightly scary, creating a sense of danger. We also see from the subtitles that they are looking for a key, and as he is the one asking where it is and showing his dominance this could portray that he is the leader.
The final two characters we see are these two. In these shots they are perceived as being close, my guess would be mother and daughter but it isn't said. We also find out later on into the trailer that she is also a trained fighter, as we see her wield a gun and then take down several aliens using a sword. This represents her character as a potential hero for the movie.
Camera and Editing Techniques:
The camera techniques that are used are mainly close up shots, this is to ensure that the shot gets moved along quickly, and to also let the audience focus on a specific thing from each shot, in the instance below this would be the knife with what seems to be blue blood dripping from it.
With the editing techniques, at the start and throughout the voice over there are dissolves between each shots. This helps to create some continuity between each shot as the audience can now tell that time has passed between each shot.
Use of Sound:
Within the trailer the voice over is the key use of sound throughout, this is to aid with the narrative of the film and provide the audience with insight as to what to expect in the film. Furthermore towards the end of the trailer there is a slight increase in sound before the title appears, and then when the final shot of her pressing the trigger, this aids to create a sense of suspense and attract the audience into the trailer and film.
Captions/Titles:
the captions within the trailer is a futuristic font in a silver/grey colour. This links in with the theme of the film of it being about aliens with the futuristic look of them. The title of the film appears in sections with a few letters appearing each time. This could convey that the hybrids are still appearing, still coming like the title.
Intended Target Audience:
The intended target audience for this trailer would be from 15-25 as it is an action thriller and would appeal to a younger generation then what the normal sort of thriller would. Where it is also a Sci-Fi thriller it would also appeal to the niche market of sci-fi fans.
How we made our trailer:
Our first step in making the trailer was to decide what shots we wanted to put where and in what order. However despite planning out our shots we ended up changing them again later when we went into the editing room as they didn't look right below is our timeline.
After we had decided what shots we wanted to put where and had them all in order on the time line, we then had the challenge of dealing with the audio, especially towards the end of the trailer. We had difficulties within the title appearing and then moving onto the next shot as the audio was clashing and we couldn't cut the audio out as it was pivotal for that shot. So to overcome this issue we had to dim the music down towards the end and then to make the music louder when it was coming into the next shot. Below is a close up of what we had to do with the audio on our timeline.
Another problem we faced was to get the caption of the movie date to look as close to the title of the film as possible. This was a lengthily process as we had to go through nearly all of the fonts on the system before we found the one we wanted, which was 'OCR A Extended' and then we had the problem of the colours, as you can see in the picture above the hybrids title is in a silver font with a yellow/white glow, we had to try and get our caption as close to this as possible, which we found difficult. Below is what we originally had our title as, but after we edited it to make it look as close to the title as possible it looked like the picture below that one.
